YORK
RURAL DISTRICT GETS NEW SCHOOL
Nine
villages in the York Rural District
are benefiting from a new three-classroom
school block.
The
Education Community Primary School
at Sattia village, constructed through
the Community-Driven Programme (CDP)
of the National Commission for Social
Action (NaCSA) also has a staff quarter,
VIP toilets, hand pump, Office, store,
as well as furniture.
The
beneficiary communities implemented
the project, through their elected
Project Management Committee (PMC)
as part of the Direct Community Financing
(DCF) strategy which empowers local
communities to manage their development
process.
Handing
over the new School, on behalf of
the Commissioner, the Project Officer,
CDP, Mr Patrick Robin, expressed satisfaction
at the timely completion of the project
and urged them to be committed to
the education of their children, as
a way to alleviate poverty in their
community.
The
CDP Project Officer also urged members
of the Project Management Committee
(PMC) to nurture skills acquired through
NaCSA, so that they would use them
to formulate and implement other projects
for their community, without always
relying on outsiders.
NaCSA's
District Coordinator, Western Area,
Mrs. Madiana Samba attributed NaCSA's
extensive rehabilitation and reconstruction
activities to Government's desire
and concern for the people of Sierra
Leone to enjoy peace and tranquility.
She reiterated that priority be given
to the education of both boys and
girls, while stressing that maintenance
of the
School
should be the responsibility of all
nine villages, through the Maintenance
Committee.
The
Supervisor of schools, Western Area,
Joseph Ellie on behalf of the Ministry
of Education Science, and Technology
(MEST), commended NaCSA for constructing
the school as it has done in other
areas, which he said was a demonstration
of government's desire and commitment
to improve education in the country.
He
described the new school as a New
Year gift which should be used to
ensure a conducive learning environment
for the children and motivation for
the teachers to teach well.
The
Head teacher of the school who was
Chairman of the occasion, Abdul R.
Kamara expressed satisfaction for
the construction of the school which
he said, started in 1966 with 13 boys
and eight girls and currently has
400 pupils, with 24 to sit the National
Primary School Examination (NPSE)
this year.
He
appealed to the ministry of Education
Science and Technology for additional
teachers to serve the large number
of pupils.
The
Headman of the Area, Abu Dumbuya paid
tribute to government for improving
education and health, as well as maintaining
peace in the country.
Community
elders and senior staff from NaCSA
also witnessed the handing-over ceremony.
The
Sattia primary school project is one
of twenty-seven multi-sectoral projects
being undertaken by Government and
its development partners, and directly
implemented by beneficiary communities
in the Western Rural District, at
a cost of over three billion leones.
